After seeing both films a week apart from the other I noticed tons of similarities. They are different, don't get me wrong, but what they do share is immensely prevalent.
While watching "
The Wolf of Wall Street" I could not help thinking about how much it shared with "
American Hustle". The big one being two cons getting caught and trying to save themselves. Also, the style in which each director tried to convey how in the hustling business you better be able to think quick in order to stay ahead. That and both protagonists commute from long island to New York city. Fun fact to point out. Obviously due to the decades difference, "
american Hustle" taking place in the late seventies, while "
wolf of Wall Street" is in the late 80s early 90s. We see a huge difference in what was used in excess one being cigarette the other cocaine. Thats sort of how it was historically, maybe not the the extent of over dosing like DiCaprio was portraying, but still in excess.
The thing that irked me most about Scoresse's film was that it tried so hard to capture how unpredictable a drug user and wall street can be, but honestly felt short. For me at least. He had tried so hard keep us guessing, but the plot was so diluted from the freedom which the cast was aloud it was not only predictable in many ways, but so unbelievable to be boring. And you could blame the insanity of Jonah Hill's character for that, he became rather obscene towards the end. Whilst "American Hustle" kept me guessing with a very complicated dynamic between each character and how they hustled each other to the point of you not knowing if someone was going to rat the other out.
Another similarity to point out is how neither movie was there some big gun fight and the FBI went after the little cons, not the big ones. Making be suggest "American Hustle" to you over "The Wolf of Wall Street".
